Mydeye specializes in embroidery design, over the collar bandanas, but if you are looking to make your own bandana, over the collar is maybe the easiest style you can make. It's a great project for sewing beginners and experts alike.
Depending on how fancy you want to get, you'll need
- Material to make a pattern or template
- 1/3 yd of two coordinating fabrics
- Patch to use for design on the triangle portion of the bandana (optional)
The first step is to make your pattern. The pattern is basically a triangle with a rectangle on top. The total width of the pattern should be approximately 1/3 to 1/2 of the diameter of your pet's neck. The rectangle portion should be slightly larger than 2 times the size of the collar you will be putting through it. So if you have a 2 inch collar, you will want the rectangle portion to be a minimum of 2 3/4" high. Your final pattern will look something like this:
Cut one pattern piece out of each of your pieces of fabric.
If you are going to use a patch for the design on your bandana, now is the time to attach it to the fabric that you want on the front triangle part of your bandana, according to the directions on the patch.
Next, with right sides of fabric together, sew along the edges of the bandana with a 1/4" seamline, leaving a space at the top of the bandana approximately 2" wide - or at least large enough to turn the bandana inside out.
Cut each of the corners on the diagonal, making sure not to cut the stitching there.
Reach through the gap you left at the top to grab the fabric from the inside to turn inside out.
After turning inside out, and making sure the fabric is pushed all the way into the corners, lay the bandana flat with the front fabric in the front.
Fold the rectangle part at the top in half lengthwise, matching up the corners of the rectangle section.
Stitch the collar area closed as close to the seam as possible, making sure you stitch the gap closed.
And that's it! You've made your first over the collar bandana. Of course, if you don't want to make your own bandana, or if you are looking for one to reflect your dog's personality or for a special occasion, you can find all of Mydeye's specialty, embroidered bandanas by going to https://mydeye.com/collections/over-the-collar-bandannas
